New Shirt, New Pets

Exciting stuff happening in our house!
First off, Leslea Harmon, of AllergyWare, and her family visited St. Louis this week and I got to meet them and dish about food allergy stuff. The main reason for meeting was for me to pick up this awesome tee shirt that I won in a contest she promoted on her blog. J picked out the shirt, and was totally thrilled to get it. It says "Do Not Feed the Animal. Some foods that are safe for you are poisonous to me. Just a bite can kill." Very cool way to spread food allergy awareness, I think, especially when it is worn by a cool kid like J. Check out her store and get allergy awareness gear for your little animals, too!

Another totally cool thing is that J has a couple new pets. We visited a creek last Friday and J came prepared with a bucket. He was intent on catching crayfish and eating them. With the help of his visiting grandad and his uncle, J caught two. His heart softened and instead of eating them he invited them into our home. Meet "Little-E," the biggest crayfish of the duo (I wonder how J came up with that name?? I'm going to keep it in quote marks so no one confuses the crayfish with my daughter)

"Little E" is, I think, a rather impressive specimen. Check out his coloring:

Sorry that's a bit blurry. It isn't easy to get a good shot of these guys. "Little-E" rules the aquarium. He is a clever crayfish, too. He dug up the bubblestone we installed and moved it from the edge of the tank over to the middle, where he shoved it inside his little cave. He likes to sit atop it, basking in the bubbles.

And here's the other crayfish, "Chipmunk." He actually almost never comes out, but I coaxed him out a bit with some food to grab this shot:

It looks like there are two of them there, what with the reflection. And that reminds me of the movie Finding Nemo. These guys are characters straight out of a Disney flick, I swear. Either that or they are Pinky and the Brain, reincarnated. The first night in the tank, after the kids went to sleep, we adults sat and watched their antics. "Little-E" would lift "Chipmunk" up out of the water, the two would sway about a bit as they apparently tried to reach the top of the tank to escape. They used their pincers to climb up the tube that feeds the bubble stone, they clicked away on the sides of the tank trying to bust through. They seem much smarter than I would expect creek critters to be. And fiesty! And mean! They are the perfect pet for my boy at the moment. I'm encouraging him to start a blog where he can log his adventures with the crayfish. Expect a link if that ever happens!
